Staff Review: Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Imagine 13 teen beauty pageant contestants, survivors of a plane crash, stranded on a deserted island. Add some reality TV pirates, a few corporate bad guys who want to rule the world, and a crazy dictator of a small country. In Beauty Queens, the girls practice their dance routines when not finding food, water and shelter, and use their cosmetics and beauty accessories to aid their defense and survival. This satirical story is laugh-out-loud funny as well as thought-provoking. These girls have determination as well as beauty, and they have more skills than even they realize.
