School shootings. Bullying. Abusive relationships. Sexting scandals. Author Jennifer Brown handles contemporary topics in young adult literature with sensitivity and empathetic storytelling. In this interview, DBRL Children’s Librarian Hollis Stolz and Isaac James, a student at Rock Bridge High School, ask her about her Gateway Award-nominated book Hate List. They also discuss her latest title, Bitter End, and her upcoming release, “Perfect Escape”, due out in July 2012.
If you dig intense plotlines and hard-hitting subjects, Jennifer recommends Crash Into Me by Albert Borris, Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick, 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers. Some of her favorite authors include John Green, Sarah Ockler, Ernest Hemingway, and Stephen King.
