Books for Dudes – Cool Summer Reads

Book Dude

I’ve found a few books you might give a try while you’re trying to stay cool this summer.  They are all pretty exciting adventure type stories.  There’s a steampunk story with cities eating each other, a world full of vampires and a secret agent’s son learning he might be a werewolf.  I hope these sound like cool summer reads.  Enjoy!

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve

In the distant future, cities have become mobile and the large feed on the small for needed supplies.  Tom, an apprentice mechanic on London, is left behind after being pushed from the cities deck.  To make his way back he forms an uneasy alliance with Hester, a scarred assassin whose plan he thwarted.  They make their way across the desolate landscape, pursued by the tireless Stalker, only to find that London has discovered a weapon that will give it the power to destroy any city it wishes.  Great Steampunk adventure.  Highly recommended.  (Check out the sequel too.)

The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda

Imagine being human in a world full of vampires and the only way to survive is to pretend you are one of them.  For Gene, that is reality.  He can’t laugh or sweat or bleed.  If he does any of these things, he is dead.  He manages this situation well until he wins a lottery to participate in a human hunt.  Now he is under a microscope and must choose between betraying his fellow humans and risking his own life.

Wolf Mark by Joseph Bruchac

Luke’s life has always been a little unsettled.  His father is a black ops agent who constantly moves around, taking Luke with him.  The nice thing is that Luke has learned a lot from his father, especially how to fight.  Then his father disappears and Luke becomes the target of sinister forces.  This book has a lot of really cool elements: werewolves, vampires, Indian mythology, martial arts and a secret evil laboratory.
