The 2009 Kirkus Reviews Book Video Awards challenges student filmmakers to produce video trailers for three upcoming YA novels published by Delacorte Press. This year’s chosen titles are:

Fallen by Lauren Kate
Very LeFreak by Rachel Cohn
The Maze Runner by James Dashner

The finalists for the 4th annual Teen Book Video Awards are Benjamin Bliss (Fallen), Rosie Lambert (Very LeFreak), and Brighton Linge (The Maze Runner).

The polls are open through Oct. 30th, so be sure to vote for your favorite video and send the link to everyone you know so they can check them out too!

ALA Teens’ Top Ten 2009

More than 11,000 teen voters chose Paper Towns as their favorite book in the 2009 Teens’ Top Ten! The online poll took place from Aug. 24 through Sept. 18, with the winners announced during Teen Read Week by WWE Divas Brie Bella and Nikki Bella, with a special appearance by John Green. Feeling a Little Dystopian?

Perhaps reflecting the unease in every society that something darker lurks beneath the veneer of civilization, a growing body of dystopian literature has recently dominated the YA science-fiction and fantasy genres. In the same spirit as Lois Lowry’s now-classic The Giver (1993), these books not only offer teens excellent escapist fare rife with survivalist adventure and grim imaginings of future worlds but also an opportunity to reflect on how the issues in their own lives and societies are mirrored in these worlds gone horribly wrong.

25 Books Nominated for This Year’s Teens’ Top Ten!

25 books nominated, and 25 weeks before voting begins for this year’s Teens’ Top Ten! Just read one a week so you can make an informed decision in October. Or, well, maybe that’s too much to ask, but check the list anyway and see if any of these titles sound interesting. Click here to see the complete list and a short description of each.

Teens’ Top Ten is a “teen choice” list, where teens nominate and choose their favorite books of the previous year! Nominators are members of teen book groups in fifteen school and public libraries around the country. Nominations are posted in April during National Library Week, and teens across the country vote on their favorite titles each year during Teen Read Week (Oct. 18-24). Readers aged twelve to eighteen can vote online that week.

2009 Top Ten Best Books for Young Adults

YALSA, the Young Adult Library Services Association (teen librarians), has just announced their 2009 Top Ten Books for Young Adults. What is a young adult? Well, if you’re 12 or 13 up to 19 or so you are. (We librarians call you “young adults” instead of “teenagers” so you’ll like us better.) Here is the list, with links to our catalog for the titles we currently have:

2008 Teen Top Ten Books Announced

More than 8,000 teens from across the country voiced their choice for their favorite books in the annual Teens’ Top Ten poll during Teen Read Week, Oct. 12-18, with “Eclipse,” the third book in Meyer’s vampire series easily taking first place. This is Meyer’s second time atop the Teens’ Top Ten list, as “New Moon” took the top slot last year.

Young Visions Photography Exhibit

First National Bank & Trust is sponsoring a photography exhibit for young photographers in two age categories – 12 and under, and 13 to 17. Photographs will be exhibited at First National Bank, 801 E. Broadway in Columbia on September 27 and 28. Teen photographers can submit a single photograph, which must be framed no larger than 16 x 20, with the frame fitted with wire for hanging. Photos must be delivered to the bank on Saturday Sept. 20. For more details and an entry form go to the First National Bank website. The library also has copies of the entry form in the Children’s area.

Get Ready For Teen Read Week October 12-18

The American Library Association has chosen Josh Hutcherson, star of Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, Bridge to Terabithia, Zathura, and many other movies, as the Spokesperson for Teen Read Week. Read an interview with him here. Josh will also be starring in the upcoming movie based on the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan.
